The Basicsbeatsrhymesnlife or brl is an album by Tribe Called Quest, but brl is also the combination of three important things in my life: music, words and life itself. Bringing those three elements together is some sweet alchemy that is a philosophy and way of creativity for an online community and circle of friends.
I started brl four years ago, but only as of December 2001 did brl really come into being. I asked a few friends to come on board the brl team to write for me, not because they were writers, honestly many of them weren't very confident about their writing, but because I felt that they had something to contribute because they are articulate. Since December 2001, brl sites has been visited over 30,000 times; my personal site, Voodoo Child, has 20,000 visits. Most of which are probably mine since I'm always working on it.
Yes, I'm self-taught in Flash, Dreamweaver, Front Page, blogging, html coding, ftp action, and most of the positions in the Kama Sutra.
It is my hope that brl contributes to the community in such a way to show different opinions and ones not so different than yours. I'm glad you're here, and I'm always open to change and ideas. As long as we have readers, we will always grow and change for the better.
The Sordid DetailsI was born in 1970 (that's right, I'm 33) in San Francisco, CA. I'm a Leo by birth, by trait and by hair. I descended from my Filipino parents and spewed forth into the world at the University of California San Francisco Moffitt Children's Hospital on the 15th floor.
I have always made San Francisco my home, even when I didn't live here. I have traveled here and there and know that there's no place like home, and you could pay me all the money in the world to leave the Bay Area, but some way or another, I'll find my way back.
I have one sibling, a brother, Buff Bagwell. He and I are very close, lending to the rumor that we are twins. The best part of our relationship is that everyone thinks he's older than me. I still live at home, after having my own place for a few years. Rent is damn near impossible in San Francisco, unless of course, you own a small country or were smart enough to cash out on your stock options before the Dot Com Bomb.
I am the victim/legacy of 14 years of Catholic school. I went to UC Davis for my undergrad, received a BA in French with a minor in theater. I went to SFSU for my MS in Counseling. I received my doctorate in International and Multicultural Education at the lovely University of San Francisco, where I earn my 50+ hours a week salary.
I am a writer, a poet, and an educator. I read books, I write books, and I blog like no tomorrow. I sing, although not in front of people I don't know. I paint, I take pictures, I cry when no one's looking, and I think tall bald men are sexy. I listen to all forms of music, mostly hip-hop and r&b. I love French accordion music. I can do most of my own web maintenance with a litle help from Pork Honey and The Apostle.
The Voodoo Child is a moniker chosen because I like it. If you have to ask what that means I can't explain it any further than that.
Rockin' My iPod 10/31/03I blog probably about once every two days, and sometimes I'll do it more than once a day. It depends on what's going on in the news or even what's happening outside my window on the world. There are times when I don't have a lot of motivation to write. The only reason that's going on is usually when I'm exhausted mentally from work and can't get away to write. It's a sucky feeling, but I always manage to write at least once a week.
