The Time Machine

Last week I registered for the Fall 04 semester at SF State.  And it looks as if I'll be doing a fair amount of studying this upcoming semester.  I'm taking four REAL classes, as opposed to just ensembles.  In fact, this year will probably be my toughest year in terms of taking classes.  But if I make it through this year, then next year will be fairly kick back.  But overall, I got 16 units so far, with only two of them being ensembles.  I have theory, history, lyric diction and choral lit.

The funny thing is, now that I have a year of full-time studentness under my belt, I am not into full-time work mode.  [Yeah, voodoo, we'll have dinner very soon]  This summer I was looking forward to working more hours, but the honest fact is I am not in the mindset to do it.  Of course I struggled a bit to keep up with bills, but I did it.  The bottom line is that I can't wait for school to start again.  I feel like nothing is challenging me right now and I'm growing stale as I'm sitting here waiting for August to finish.

Weird, eh?

But then again, I am a music major.

Bacio

Is there a difference between a kiss on the cheek and one on the lips?

What if the lip one is a peck?  or a soft, lingering one?  or more than one, but still a peck?

In my previous experiences, I've thought that a kiss on the lips is a 'more than a friend' type of interaction.  But recently, I'm starting to think [from first-hand experience] that not everyone thinks that way.

I watched the Simpsons on Sunday.  They were imprisoned at Alcatraz for 'hating America.'  After taking part in a talent competition they escape [a la the von Trapp family from The Sound of Music].  As they start swimming toward San Fransicso, Homer says, "Waitminute, I'm not made of money, I'm swimming to OAKLAND."

I couldn't stop laughing.

Wedding Singer

I recently attended a wedding last night. My friend Zabo, from SF State, finally married his girlfriend of four years. The cool thing is that we met before they got together and so it's really nice to see a couples' relationship evolve before me.

They had the ceremony over in Orinda at Santa something church. Since I didn't go out the night before I figured I'd get enough sleep and wake up early so I could clean my room, dry some clothes and shop for the gift before I went to go pick up my friend, Emberglo, whom I brought with me. Unfortunately I got up like at 1115 and then I had to scramble to dry my clothes, shower, change and finally roll to Target (where I ended up just buying a gift card). Luckily, Emberglo hadn't bought a gift either so we figured we'd attend the ceremony and then roll to Target in Walnut Creek before we hit up the reception.

First of all, let me just say that Emberglo straight FLOORED me. She was stunning! Cool! That always makes weddings better. At least one of us was good lucking. You know?! I was plain in my slacks and white shirt but hey what the hell. Anyway, we ended up going halves for some bath rugs.

The reception was in Concord off of Clayton Road. All was going well. Open bar [gin/tonic] and appetizers [okoy] helped get us comfortable for the main dinner, which was a buffet [complete with lechon!] After the dinner we were waiting for the bride's Tito Rey, no that's really his name(!), to sing. But when Tito Rey went up, his background music wasn't ready. So the MC asked the groom to call up someone in the room for some last minute entertainment. As soon as Zabo saw me I thought, "Sh!t, he's gonna call me up there." Sure enough the MC called my name, and luckily the whiskey over rocks loosed my inhibitions enough.

It ended up going okay. I sang Earth Angel, at first a cappella, and then the DJ gave me some Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis remis beat. So I switched it up and sang Earth Angel to this funky beat. The other MC felt so sorry for me that she ended up joining me! It all worked out in the end, because Tito Rey found his background music. But Zabo and his wife both thanked me for filling in last minute. In fact Zabo said the only person he could think of that would actually do it was me anyway. How cool is that!

So, finally, everything went well and we danced the night away. I can actually claim to now know the: Mambo No.5, ChaCha Swing and the TodoTodo line dances. Weddings are the only places you'll see me trying stuff like that. Plus, it's a given fact that there will always be women who are willing to dance, especially at weddings. Fellas, keep that in mind. You can cover the bases with Swing and Cha-Cha. Bonus if you can Salsa or Tango.

Lastly, I dropped off Emberglo at home and went to catch the last bit of the annual Alameda Park Street Bar Crawl with my boy Lex and his friend from Samuel Merritt. A good way to end the night.

Wow, it makes me realize how FAR I am from getting married. Good, too, because I can barely take care of myself. Plus, I snore hella loud.

Thanks to a tip from AgentCB I got my application in to the Red Bull Music Academy, but barely on time. I hope they don't count it too much against me that when they asked for songs I couldn't name labels. Oh well.

The RoShamBo gig went fine. We did three sets at the San Rafael Farmers market. And made a crapload of tips. In fact, aside from music, if any of y'all have time, get down to the Marin side in the early afternoon and then at 6 hit up the market. It's a pretty good time with great weather and great entertainment.

In case those of you think 'Hella' is only a NorCal thing, guess again. I've now heard it in Hawaii, Seattle and [dun dun duh] Texas. That's right, while walking through a mall near Arlington I heard some Texas girls say, "That's hella cool!" I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't my cousins [from Daly City] but sure enough it was Texas girls, because I could tell by their twang.
