REPRESENTIN' THE REAL
today i came back to my alma mater as a professional in the field. it was empowering to be on the other side of a graduate class and be the presenter. even more appealing was the fact that i was representing my work with music and youth.

more specifically Hiphop culture.

so i got to talk about how i used Hiphop in my field study, which is basically a practice of your professional skills before they graduate your ass with a master's.

the class was a human development class for counselors. so basically, getting to learn about the stages of development and how they come into play in therapy.

at first i didn't understand why i was going to present Hiphop, but it made sense after my professor wanted me to talk about field study and how teens and youth responded to my unorthodox approach.

keeping the counselor mumbo jumbo to a minimum, i basically reframed the dynamics of a freestyle session or open mic into palattable terms that a counselor would understand. I also defined the dynamics and intervention involved in my project and how i made Hiphop a tool for counseling.

i passed out lyrics to talib kweli's "get by" remix and 2pac's "thugz mansion" and had a listening party during class.
people asked questions like "why Hiphop" and what to do about the negative stuff that is in rap music. i broke 'em off a piece with some knowledge and flexed my master's degree of knowledge to the nonbelievers. it was enlightening to some and other's still thought Hiphop is bad.

fuck 'em.

but anyway... i also presented Hiphop's "declaration of peace" and a little blurb about templeofhiphop.org. you can find about both of the above at this link. learn more and spread the truth

keep Hiphop alive!

it's also unfortunate that it qualified as associated press' "breaking news." cmon ya'll, that's fucked up. it's bad enough that it happened once, but man, it's not the first time! wtf.

WALK THE WALK, TALK RADIO
i noticed that i have been listenting to AM radio more and more. i'm not exactly bothered by it, but what has drawn a red flag in my mind's sketchbook is the fact that i am listening to some conservative ass radio programming.

i believe it started while driving my agency's van around. our students get rides home because it's dark and the neighborhood is a little less that perfect to say the least.

so we only have AM radio in that shit. might as well turn off the radio and listen to the tires hum along the pavement right? well yeh but after so much of that shit, u go crazy... plus our van's engine makes this weird noise like someone's fuckin with the air conditioning underneath the hood.

duwendes* perhaps?

anyway, so i've been listening to so-called "experts" like michael savage, armstrong and getty, and some other numbnuts out there that claim to have "no spin" or whatever.

now i don't mind people who are conservative or republican. this is america, it's freedom of choice. but when people are claiming to be experts and turn out to be ignorant when it bothers the shit out of me. i guess what really pisses me off is when liberals call the station to retort. usually they're not prepared and then the host just berates them on the air.

in my opinion, i see no difference between the debate between the right and left vs. the red and blue gangbangers i see on occassion at my work. everyone just wants to fit in and have their say.

but no one is saying anything really new.

pitiful.

*duwendes are little dwarf like people that live in the forests of the philippines. don't fuck with them, they don't fuck with you.

IMAGINE MY SURPRISE
when i looked over to my alarm clock this morning and it stared back at me "5:48am," which means it's really 5:18am. being the paranoid person that i am, i set my clock a half an hour ahead, just so i won't be late... however, in reality it has become moreso "oh good, i can sleep another half hour."

anyway...

i wake up at 5:18 to every light on in my room and my computer still online (yes, i am a dialup dinosaur). fuck. did it again. at least the tv wasn't on this time.

the last memory i had was saying good night to sunshine. i'll spare you the ritual of mushiness, the distance makes it hard for us 2 hang up... so sue us.

but yeh, i can understand if i had a heavy night of drinking that i would have memory blackouts, but i haven't drank anything last night. just got KTFO (a la chris tucker in "Friday") perhaps it is the 31 years of existence, creepin on me. who knows. all i know is that i'm pretty content right now.

so here i am, waiting for 730am to arrive to do my daily wake-up call to sunshine. thank god for mobile to mobile. hell sometimes, we even stay on the phone while sleeping just cuz we can... haha i love getting over on corporate america. 2 hours of snoring over long distance phone calls. that's worth the extra $5 that the phone company jacks us for.

take that u corporate bastards!

and for those concerned about cell phones and radiation, don't worry, i use a headset when i use the phone. i even got one for sunshine. we look like gap employees with that shit on. but at least i won't get brain cancer. not that it will happen, but hey, u never know. i have a feeling that one day all this wireless shit will catch up to us.

so i've managed 2 make this long distance thing work. it's never really been an issue, save for the days when i have to leave seattle or sunshine leaves sac. either way, the airport proves to be the mecca for bittersweet memories. i could have written blog after blog about the feelings that erupt at the airport... but yeh, it would get repetitive.

perhaps i will blog on that another morning...

IN MEMORY

got this via email...

Magdaleno Sanchez Duenas, 90
May 27, 1914 - February 27, 2005

Courageous Filipino World War II Veteran Passes Away at 90

Magdaleno Duenas was born in Maasin, Southern Leyte, Philippines on May 27, 1914.  His parents were Raymundo Caolino Duenas and Rosa Ortiz Sanchez.  He had 7 siblings, all of who have passed away.  He is survived by his half brother and sister, Raymundo and Concepcion Duenas who reside in Marikina, Philippines.

As a child Mr. Duenas lived in the Institute of San Jose in Leyte.  He grew up in a convent, and after finishing grade school he went to Cebu to work as an errand boy for a certain Manang Lolay.

In 1937, Mr. Duenas went with his friend, Jesus La Serna, to Davao City to work for Charles Parson, owner of Luzon Stevedoring.  In November 1941, he received a telegram from Edward Goldsborough and Robert Fletcher and asked him to report for duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.   Mr. Duenas joined the 101st Infantry in Davao, Philippines.

In 1943, Mr. Duenas joined the guerilla forces and lived in the mountains.  While in the mountains, he did not have any shoes and he survived by eating yam (camote) and lugaw (soup).  On December 24, 1942, he was captured by the Japanese soldiers while getting food supply at the request of the American soldiers. He was questioned on the whereabouts of the American soldiers, of which he denied any knowledge.   At nighttime, he successfully escaped and returned to the guerilla forces in the mountains.  On the evening of April 4, 1943, while the Japanese guards were asleep, Mr. Duenas assisted in the escape of 10 U.S. soldiers from the Davao Penal Colony.   These 10 U.S. soldiers then joined the guerilla forces until the liberation.  Mr. Duenas ensured that they had enough food to survive the difficulty of hiding.

After the liberation, Mr. Duenas lived in Misamis Occidental. He was enlisted by the government as one of the many Filipino soldiers who fought alongside with the Americans during World War II.  Since 1948, he received a token every Christmas from General Schoefner, who was one of the 10 soldiers that Mr. Duenas helped escape from Davao Penal Colony.

In 1991, Mr. Duenas was approached by a certain Mr. Dazo to help him get his documentation to obtain his U.S. citizenship. After Mr. Duenas arrived in Richmond, California, in 1992, Mr. Dazo took advantage and abused Mr. Duenas.  In 1993, a group of Filipino American community advocates discovered the living conditions of Mr. Duenas and other Filipino World War II veterans and rescued them from the hands of Mr. Dazo.   It was discovered that Mr. Duenas' welfare check were being taken by Mr. Dazo.  Mr. Dazo forced Mr. Duenas to work against his will, and punished him by tying him on his bed with a chain and was fed dog food.

Mr. Duenas began residing in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco in 1993.  All these years, he waited, for the recognition of the U.S. government for the services he had rendered during World War II.  Mr. Duenas was featured in two documentaries, Tears of Old by Joy Lacanienta and Second Class Veterans by Don Young.  He died still waiting for the full equity bill in the U.S. Congress to be passed.

The San Francisco Veterans Equity Center will hold a memorial service for Mr. Duenas on March 7, 2005 at 5:30 p.m. at the War Memorial, 401 South Van Ness, San Francisco.   For more information, please contact the SFVEC at (415) 255-2347 or email at sfvec2000@yahoo.com.
