living in america, i know for a fact that i'm shielded from the reality we call "the rest of the world." i had gone to a luncheon with my boss and we had to pick up a person who i think is our grant monitor for the county.
my boss and her were chatting then they got to the topic of jamaica for some reason. i had mentioned that i went to jamaica once and was surprised to find a chinese restaurant there. then homegirl proceeded to tell me that in certain towns, there are alot of jamaicans mixed with chinese.
she had discovered this as she stayed with relatives in jamaica. in one village, she had a chinese taxi cab driver who spoke full jamaican patois (pat-twa).
imagining a chinese dude sayin' "yah mon, i drop you off pon di riva" had me crack a smile. but at the same time made me realize that we in america continue to ignore the ethnic and cultural mixing that has been going on in the rest of the world for some time now.
maybe it's living in sac that's getting to me, but i think i'm getting tired of ignorance, my own included.
