CURIOSITY

took an inkblot test at emode.com. it says my subconscious is driven by curiosity. naturally i was curious about that, and i took more tests. took an iq test and the mensa workout.

i am NOT a geek. i'm just curious. show me your score and i'll show you mine.

NO LOOKING BACK
it's been almost a year since i've been to cache creek casino way out in the boondocks (fyi: that word is filipino in origin; bundok=mountain). the reason why i know this is because at this time last year, my rear view mirror fell off.

i just put it back on this morning.

i got so used to not having it, i find myself in a stupor, admiring the view of the backseat and rear window of my car. "so that's what it looks like..." i finally made my way to a buick/olds dealership and asked for some hi-grade rear view mirror adhesive. the shit cost almost six bucks so it better work.

the reason for the pricey purchase is because almost every summer up here in sac, the rear view mirror falls off in my car. it's usually during the heat wave in july (which we are currently experiencing 17 continuous days of 100+ weather). i buy the stuff from your kragen or your chief auto parts and the shit don't last.

we'll see how this "professional" shit holds up. not gonna hold my breathe. just gonna enjoy the view while it lasts.

APPREHENDED
during dinner time yesterday, 2 salesmen greeted me at the door. normally this would be an unwelcome intrusion into my life, but something was different about this occasion.

instead of being the usual high pressured and obstinate salespeople, they were taken aback by something. one of them apologized for being caught off guard.

"Be careful" he said as he pointed to the corner.

i slowly open my screen door and took a peek at the bottom and saw this...

luckily he wasn't moving around much because it was so hot. the salespeople cut their visit short and i ran off to the garage to capture this gigantor spider. i don't know why i didn't want to kill it, but i just didn't feel like it. i was probably afraid it would block my advance and counter with some deadly venomous jump or something.

so i got a fishing pole rod, my fish net and some tape. i macguyvered (tm) a spider catcher and managed to get homeboy into a jar.

after some research online, i concluded he/she was a wolf spider and not the dangerous brown recluse. had it been the brown recluse i would have sold it to UCD so they could do animal testing(jokes!) hopefully he'll be there when i get back. i think i will bring him/her to the river area. and let it go.

then i will run like hell.

DEEP THOUGHTS
i woke up to a mag light shining in my eyes at 4am this morning. felt like i was in boot camp or something.

it was only my brother waking me up to help him open the garage. turns out there was a blackout this morning and his car was stuck in the garage.

after helping him get his car out i couldn't get back to sleep. so after tossing and turning for about a 1/2 hour, i decided to do something.

"i'll go online..." oh wait. can't do that.

"i'll work on music..." damn. can't do that either.

"get something to eat..." i shouldn't open the fridge. don't know how long the power will be out for.

i couldn't watch tv or listen to the radio. (my clie was in the car and i didn't want to go outside). so i did what any person up at 5am would do.

think.

i thought about a lot of different stuff going on. what my current situation was. how i felt about it. good thoughts, bad thoughts...

i looked outside and saw how dark everything was. the moon cast an eerie faint blue glow across all the houses in the neighborhood. it was practically dead silent save for a few cars crossing on highway 50.

i also thought about how dependent on electricity we are here in the states. i wondered if that was a good thing or not.

concluded that it wasn't a good thing. but at least i'd still have my acoustic guitar.

at 5:30am the power went back on and i was shocked at how loud everything was in my room. my monitor buzzed into standby mode. my window fan whirred away and every damn digital clock in my room started blinking intermittently making me crazy in the darkness.

so i did what anyone would do who was up at 5:30am, couldn't sleep and just did a bunch of thinking...

i went online...

like bobby bouchet's mom would say "don't u dare go on the world wide web bobby bouchet, the internet is the devil."

how true ms. bouchet. the internet has turned me away from thinking.

Speaking of reading articles. I recently was given a hand-out about "what culture is" and "what it is not." Although I can agree that some of these things do not necessarily determine a culture, however, I do believe some of these "what is not" can be a part of one's culture and heritage.

Let me know what you guys think.

What it is not:
-mere Artifacts or Material used by a people(artifacts and materials alone do not make up a culture)
-a laundry list of traits and facts
-biogical traits such as race
-the ideal and romantic heritage of a people as seen through music, dance, holiday, etc.
-something to be bought, sold, or passed out (i totally agree with this one)
-Higher class status derived from a knowledge of the arts, manners, literature, etc.

that's all for now. I'm just curious as to how other people view what is and what is not culture.

CLASSICAL
i never thought i would be playing classical music on my guitar but that's exactly what i did today for my midterm. for those of you who care to know, i'm taking a beginning guitar class at sac city college. i'm starting to get deja vu so i think i've posted this before...

anyway...

i had to learn "jesu, joy of man's desire" for part of my midterm. the other part was a written test that i think i did ok since i took piano lessons for 7 years (1st grade to 8th grade). i learned the piece pretty well, i have the callouses on my fingertips to prove it. but when my teacher watched me for the midterm i was nervous. but it's cool cuz he just wanted to see if we were actually practicing. heh.
