i've been playing more chess as of late. i learned a few months ago and now it's my new way of unwinding. it's a cool way to hang out with my parents without us irritating each other or stepping in each other's space. i like it too because it's one of the rare times that my parents won't give me shit loads of advice on how i should run my life. they're too busy trying to whoop my ass in chess.
i guess competition can be a good thing after all.
so anyway, i played my mom twice and capitalized on her mistakes. took her queen in the first game and being the poor sport she is, wanted to quit and start over. next game i was able to attack her from all sides. it wasn't pretty.
dad was next and he is more challenging. we spend at least the first 10 moves just moving pawns around. with all pieces still on the board, the game really got started when i took one of his bishops.
as my mom says, it was a massacre after that.
my dad and i play with similar styles, with the exception that he doesn't attack as much as i do. he waits and then bam. you're dead. with that in mind, i looked at every possible interaction with the pieces and proceeded with caution.
in the end, we had the same amount of pieces and i finally trapped him in the corner. i don't have as much fun beating my dad as i do my mom. with him it's more about enjoying the game and the company. with my mom, it's just about beating each other's ass. ahah
no wonder why i am the way i am.

been real busy as of late. part of the daily routine includes tutoring at a local high school, hiram johnson out here in sac. i'm tutoring this student in geometry and sometimes physics.
my ass is rusty.
i find it intriguing how much more interesting math and science are when you are not forced to learn it. it almost seems fun (shudder).
you see, i wasn't that great in math when i was in high school. i find it ironic that i am now trying to tutor it. through all my education, i have made a realization that all the stuff i struggled with in high school has almost become second nature.
i guess i actually learned something.
anyway... i think more importantly, the mentorship component is what's really cool about tutoring. my student doesn't have much supporting him. he's dope at football and wants to follow emmit smith's path. i'm hoping that i can help him focus on things. u see, he has the infamous attention deficit disorder (ADD) according to school admin. sometimes schools are quick to diagnose, so i'm keeping an eye out as his advocate. im not trying to be rebel counselor here, but i'm just making sure to get this boy's back... because if i don't, no one else will.
today in class i got this handout about ADD and a list of famous people that have (or had) it. the list includes, michael jordan, magic johnson, robin williams (that's not surprising to me) beethoven, alexander graham bell, john f. kennedy and bill cosby.
ain't that cool?
take that, negative stigma...

it's been a while since i've had a day to myself. i have no idea what i'm going to do today. i woke up early out of habit and now i've decided to jump online to maybe figure out what i can do today. there's a ton of shit i could do, but i think it's more important to rest.
maybe i'll just work on some music and tweak my master plan

it looks like dubya and his gang is itchin' to whoop some ass in the spirit of john wayne and other cowboy colonizers of the 50's and 60's. i don't understand how we as a nation can ignore the rest of the world, even when it's clear that even their major allies (france, germany) are iffy on the US' reason's for war.
as i watch things get shittier around the world, i can't help but wonder how many americans really know how serious this can get... pride aside, we can really fuck shit up here if we don't watch it.
we're not on orange alert because we've been the world's "policeman."
